Protein is an essential component of many human body tissues. It makes up the outer layers of one’s skin, nails and hair, and the majority of the body’s muscles, hormones and organs are made up of proteins. Protein is essential in creating, growing and maintaining body tissues. Major metabolic, digestive and circulatory systems of the body involve protein. The human body’s defense against illness and infections are antibody cells. The production of antibody cells are heavily reliant on protein.

Protein can be found in many foods. Animal foods such as poultry, meat, shellfish and fish are high in protein. Dairy products and eggs are also a source of high protein. Eggs are among the best sources for protein. They contain the greatest levels of amino-acids, which in turn are high in protein. Other common sources of protein include grains, figs, nuts and beans, fruits such as apricots, cherries, grapes, bananas, and of course milk, yogurt and avocados.

Patients are sometimes prescribed a high protein diet by their physicians. One should be aware that this type of dietary change can result in rapid weight loss because of a loss of fluids in the body.

As with any change in diet, be sure you consult your physician if you are considering a high protein diet. Be warned that this type of dietary change can be harmful if done incorrectly. A diet high in protein is an increased health risk for those who suffer from liver or kidney diseases.

Consuming your recommended daily dose of protein can be done with a variety of foods. Experts recommend that about 10 to 15% of one’s caloric intake come from protein sources. This can be achieved by consuming 2 to 3 servings of dairy in addition to 2 to 3 servings of poultry, fish or meat each day. One should be wise in choosing animal produce as they also contain high levels of calories and cholesterol. They should be eaten in moderation.
